* UPDATE: In October 2021, the FDA gave R.J. Reynolds an official green light for the company to market some of its vaping products, marking the first time the government agency has authorized use of any e-cigarette. The FDA cited manufacturer data that e-cigs can help people addicted to cigarettes quit or reduce smoking, though the evidence for this remains controversial.
